A Scruffy is a side bet or point game in which a golfer, after hitting her drive, wagers that she will par the hole. Scruffies are traditionally issued after poor drives but can be called on any drive. Scruffies are NOT automatic - the other members of the group must agree to accept the challenge after it has been issued - so calling "Scruffy" after a great drive might not get you anywhere.

Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of game scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved (tie) or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved and no points are awarded. If the match is tied either each player or team receives half a point.

Three-Putt Poker is a golf golf betting or points game that combines an element of poker with the golfers' performance on the greens. At the beginning of a round of golf, the members of the group ante up the opening bet (say $2 each) and each member is dealt one playing card. On each green of the front nine, any golfer who who takes three putts or more on a hole is required to add to the pot (for a $3 initial bet, a 3-putt can require $1 more to the pot).

A Horse Race is a golf tournament format with a field of many players. On each hole (or accumulated holes), player(s) is eliminated until only one remains - the champion, crowned on the last hole. Many games also play for the last three remaining and award Win, Place, and Show. A Horse Race is a slow game and even more slow in the early going, because all players must complete each hole before play moves on. On each hole, high scores are eliminated. Expect a lot of playoffs (chip offs for ties) in the early going, adding even more time.

A "ladder tournament" is a game format used for groups of golfers (usually playing as individuals) who start out ranked from lowest handicap to highest, with those below trying to improve their position. To "move up the ladder" - you challenge players to matches. A ladder golf game takes place over an extended period of time and can be thought of as self-serve. The Portland, Oregon Chapter used this format to select their Match Play Champions Cup team in 2012.
