Welcome to the Executive Women's Golf Association's Miami Chapter.

The EWGA exists to provide opportunities for women to learn, play and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life.

Since 1991, the EWGA has touched the lives of over 85,000 women.  This not-for-profit membership association currently has nearly 20,000 members in over 120 Chapters throughout the United States along with International Chapters in Canada and Italy.  EWGA offers a wide range of organized golf activities, player development and education programs, volunteer, social and networking opportunities for both novice and experienced golfers.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

As your new President, I am pleased to announce that Shula's Golf Club has agreed to renew the complimentary, annual golf membership to all Miami EWGA female members.  Thanks to Kenny Fill, golf Pro at Shula's, for providing us with this great benefit!  The green fees for Shula's will be $25.68 (includes tax and cart fee).  EWGA members can invite guests, and the guest fees will be $45.00.  There are some lockers available.  You can contact Preston Roberts or Kenny Fill at Shula's (phone 305-820-8106) to reserve your locker.  I encourage you to renew your EWGA Miami Chapter membership to receive Shula's Golf Club membership, along with the many other great benefits EWGA has to offer.

You can also join our EWGA Miami Chapter GHIN account at an annual fee of $15.00 (guests welcome for an annual fee of $20.00).  As your Handicap Chair, I will provide you with assistance in maintaining your handicap.  Please pass this information on to a golf friend who is not yet an EWGA member.  Let her knjow she can join online at the web site, ewga.com, or tell her to contact me at jcoxgolf@aol.com.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

The Symposium On Affordable Golf is held annually in Southern Pines, North Carolina and is sponsored by Richard Mandell Golf Architecture.  Richard Mandell, the principal in the firm, feels that one of golf’s biggest problems is that it costs too much for golfers to play.  Said another way, many of golf’s other problems may be less impactful in a $40 round of golf as compared to a $125 round of golf.

The mission of the Symposium On Affordable Golf is to raise awareness and understanding of the challenges of the golf industry through open discussion, exchange of ideas and the highlighting of successes that promote the health and sustainability of the game of golf.  In planning for this year’s Symposium, a survey is being conducted in an effort to gather information about the golf experience that the golfer – you - really wants to have.

Thus far, the survey has shown good results. However, they primarily represent the opinions of low handicap, male golfers.  This is an opportunity for women golfers to be heard.

CHAPTER CHAMPIONSHIP 2012


The Chapter Championship was played at Don Shula's Golf Resort on May 5, 2012.  1st Low Net and 1st Low Gross will move on to the EWGA Semi-Finals for Central and South Florida to be held June 22 at Raptor Bay Golf Course in Bonita Springs.  Good Luck!

Important Statistic: Three Putt Avoidance

Excerpt from GOLFDIGEST January 2012- Lesson Tee by Hank Haney

“One STATISTIC the PGA Tour keeps is an Extremely Important Barometer of how well a player is performing.  It is called THREE-PUTT AVOIDANCE.  If you don’t believe me, look at Luke Donald’s statistics from 2011.

He went  500 Holes without a three-putt, and he finished the year No. 1 in three-putt avoidance.

For the recreational player, REDUCING THREE-PUTTS  is one of the biggest factors, IF NOT THE BIGGEST—in reaching a scoring goal. 

Even if you don’t make first putts, IMPROVING YOUR SPEED CONTROL ON THE GREENS  is the fastest way to take, I’d say, three shots off a double-digit handicap, or to break 80 or 70 for the first time if you’re a low-handicap player. You’ll thank me if you do.”

Golf is Exercise*

Experts agree that adults should get 30 minutes of moderate –intensity exercise five days a week.

BUT DOES GOLF COUNT?  YES, according to The Compendium of Physical Activities which lists energy requirements for various activities in terms of metabolic rate (MET).

Moderate exercise is defined as anything that registers between 3 and 6 METs.

Playing golf ranges from 3.5 (riding in a cart) to 5.3 (walking).

Inter-Chapter Golf Shamble Event - July 14

Palm Beach County EWGA Chapter has invited us to an Inter-Chapter Shamble.

When:  Saturday, July 14
Time:  12 PM - Registration
            1 PM - Shotgun Start
       5:30 PM - Dinner buffet, prizes
Cost:  $65

Format:  Two tournaments in one.  Each foursome will compete for prizes and all members from same chapter will compete against the other chapters.

MEMBER NEWS

Hole-in-One

Julie Abolila had a hole-in-one on March 13, 2012 at the Doral Red course, on hole #6!

Julie used her 4 wood and EWGA member Jackie Cox was the first to the flag and saw her golf  ball in the hole!   There were around 16 ladies playing that day; so Julie had to buy a few bottles of wine after golf!  It was a great day for all!

WEEKLY LEAGUE PLAY RESULTS

We played T's & F's last Saturday, April 28.  The weather held out for us and we got in 18 holes!  Ingrid Hunter won with a low net of 32.  Our league has ended; however, hope to still get together on some Saturday's at Shula's for golf.  We may begin another league session in September (through November).  The awards for this league will be presented at our annual golf meeting (usually held around December).  Take care, everyone!  I'll see you on the golf course!  ~ Jackie Cox, President

We played Nassua - low net front, low net back and low net overall.   Carolyn Caplan won low front with a net 30!  Jackie Cox won low back with a 34.5!  Jennifer West won low overall with a 68!  Congratulations to the winners!

We played points last week.  Congratulations to Pat Vegnani who had a great game that gave her 40 points!!  Satoko Umeda was second with 39 points!

Great day for golf (except for the back nine!)!  A bit wet and muddy, wouldn't you say??!!  We played 9 hole, blind draw.  After the drawing, Ingrid Hunter and Jackie Cox got lucky with low nets of 31.5 on the selected holes.  Deborah Bruno had a low net of 32 (close).

The weather was great today.  A little shower to keep us cool, otherwise, beautiful day!  Jackie Cox won with a low net of 63.  Both Sherri Patchen and Satoko Umeda had a low net of 71, holding down 2nd place.

We played "ONES". Congratulations to Jennifer West, who had a low net of 35.5. Sherri Patchen had a 36 and Jackie Cox had a 37.

It felt more like the middle of July today!  We all had a great time, even though our tee times were late! Ingrid Hunter won the T's and F's with a low net of 32!  Helen Ahn had a low net of 33 and Pat Vegnani had a low net of 34!  Great scores, ladies!

Low net winner was Marie Staebel with a 68.  Helen Ahn won second place with a 69.

There were nine of us who braved the weather and the course. Only 3 holes on the back nine were opened, so we repeated some holes until we got in 18. The course turned out to be OK, with the 90 degree cart ruling. We played for low putts. 

Jackie Cox won with 29 putts. Jan Smith and Jennifer West each had 31 putts. All-in-all, it was a pretty good day for golf!

Congratulations to Sherri Patchin and Helen Ahn as our winners Saturday.  Sherri won the front nine with a net 31.  Helen won the back nine with a 34.5, and low overall with a 67.

We played a 9-hole blind draw and Sherri Patchen won with a low net of 33.  Helen Ahn had a low net of 34.
