Did you know there's an auto service station in the Rochester area that's run by a woman?
It's
Action Towing & Service, it's located on 275 Marketplace Drive - between the Henrietta Regal Cinema and Red Lobster on Jefferson - and it's also an Eagle Sponsor of the Rochester Chapter of the Executive Woman's Golf Association.
"We're two businesses under one roof," explains Joan Gaylord, who co-owns the business with her son. "I run the service side, and my son runs the towing side." It was her son's idea, in fact, for Gaylord to open the auto service shop. "He wanted a service station he could recommend for people whose cars had broken down," she says. Gaylord had been doing bookkeeping for the towing business, so she knew the two could work together. "I'd always dreamed of owning my own business," she says. "It was an opportunity I had to explore."
That was in 2004. Since then, Action Towing & Service has done so well they outgrew their original location; last year, they moved into a new, larger facility. "Our new space is 44,000 square feet," Gaylord says. "It's bigger than some dealerships." The service station has 11 lifts (with plans to add up to five more); the towing side of the business is up to 26 trucks.
Gaylord takes equal pride in the front of the shop, which has a clean and comfortable waiting room with a television and WiFi, and a children's corner for customers who need help keeping their kids occupied while they wait for their cars.
Touches like these exemplify Gaylord's approach to running her business. "I love building a brand and connecting with customers," she says. "I love the personal part of being a business owner." Her staff take extra time to make sure customers understand the nature of repairs being made to their cars. And if you're a single woman, you'll be happy to know Action Towing & Service will be sensitive to your situation. "I was a single mother at one point, and I understand the ramifications when you're alone and don't have the use of your car."
It's little wonder that Action Towing & Service consistently earns top ratings for customer service. "We work very hard to build trust," Gaylord says. "We hand out survey cards to all of our customers, which are submitted to AAA, and we've never gotten a truly bad report."
And what about Gaylord's golf game? Like all of us, she loves to play, and gets out as much she can. "When I play regularly, I get better," she notes. "My game gets more consistent."
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
But hey, at least car issues won't keep us from our tee times - because we have an auto service shop we can trust to keep our cars in tiptop shape!
