2015 LA Event Recap

San Dimas Canyon Recap 3/11/15

San Dimas Canyon Re-Cap
Our 3/15 event was a vision in green, with raffle tickets awarded for each item of green worn. Several players won prizes, but leprechaun Roberta Kantola took the grand prize with her all-out effort. Mother Nature contributed with a cloud cover most of the day, keeping the temp 5 degrees or more below what was projected. There were several mini-matches played and some very close contests. Congrats to closest to pin winners Lauren Suzuki (#2), Wendy Michaels (#5), Laura Kennedy (#7), Cecilia Worcester (#10) & Angie Charky (#16).  Carol Grosvenor had low putts with 30, but there were no chip-ins, so the pool will roll over to the next regular 18-hole event (Simi Hills). Thanks to Commodore (Laura) Perry & Captain (Laura) Kumazawa for all their help!

Membership Kickoff 4/11/15

Our Membership Kickoff was held at DeBell GC in Burbank April 11. We had a delicious buffet breakfast, lots of drawings & shopping with vendors, followed by optional 9 or 18 holes of golf.  We had several guests and new members attend. Congrats to Judy Mirick for winning $200 in the 50/50 drawing, & to all the other winners of the fabulous prizes donated by our members & sponsors!

Thank you to kickoff committee of Holly Schroeder, Alice Belcher, Barbara Trivison, Karen White and DeeDee Carter, chaired by Laura Kennedy. Thanks also to Roberta Kantola for selling jewelry and to our trunk show participants, Leora Lang w/Stella and Dot and Sheryl with Fore Golf Divas. Several people gave donations for raffle items including Barbara Trivison, Lauren Suzuki, Mary Ayers, Roberta Kantola, An Marie Eckfeldt, DeBell Club Professional, American Golf & DeBell. Thank you to An Marie for her helpful pointers on driving the ball and putting, and to Carol Grosvenor on her input regarding handicaps.

Simi Hills 4/18/15

EWGA's special play day 4/18 at Simi Hills GC was a great success. Nine groups played in support of the First Tee of Greater Pasadena. We also had a "husband foursome" lead off and welcomed new and returning EWGA-LA members and guests. Angie Charky, Lori Baker and Judy Mirick won multiple times (but they also bought a lot of drawing tickets). There were several chip ins as well as a 50/50 drawing, with Vera Dem winning $200. In addition to the 50/50 proceeds, we raised $340 in the "Pick-a-Prize" drawing. Closest to the pin winners were Judith Pachiarz and Lisa Grimm; Steve Dem won the low putt pool.  Special thanks to our committee (Yvonne Guerra, Judie Chinskey, Lori Baker, Candice Vaughn, Cecilia Worcester and Holly Schroeder), our many sponsors, the staff at Simi and everyone that gave of their time, talent, and treasure to EWGA-LA and the FTP.

Santa Anita 5/2/15

49 members & 1 guest played in our rain-out make up day at Santa Anita 5/2. This time we had great weather, and there were a lot of laughs heard on the course.  Sarah Howard, sports yoga coach, came early and guided many of the players in golf-specific stretching exercises. Congrats to all our winners: We had 5 chip-ins (Wendy Barnard, Alice Belcher, Holly Schroeder, Elise Anderson & Deanna Hammerli), splitting the pool with $9 each.  The low putts pool was split 3 ways, between Alice, Deanna & Barbara Arnold. Debbie Dakouzlian (#4) and Cecilia Worcester (#15) each took home $25 Roger Dunn cards for Closest to the Pin, and Elise scored a $20 RD card for winning Most Colorful.  Our game was “Beat Your Course Handicap!” and four players did that: Alice, Judy Mirick, Janice Okanishi & Kathy Malmfeldt. Thanks to all the helpers: Judy Mirick, Terri Ulbricht, Ayanna Lonian & Judie Chinskey.

Scholl Canyon April 25, 2015

Our Scholl Canyon 9E event April 25 was a lot of fun despite Mother Nature providing cool, breezy temperatures, sprinkles and outright rain. Some did not get in the full 18 holes because of the weather.  We welcomed 3 new members: Marsha Schnirring, Sylvia Torres and Denise Winslett and hope for better weather for their next event!

Congratulations to the winner of closest to the pin contest, hole #7, Janice Kuwahara, on return to her first golf outing after a bout with pneumonia. Glad to have her back, sorry it was such a cold, wet day.  Closest to the pin on hole #16 was new member Sylvia Torres.  Nice job, ladies.  Each received a gift card from our sponsor Roger Dunn. The voluntary chip in pool of $23.00 was won by Karen White who chipped in on hole # 15.  The putting pool was modified because of the rain and everyone was not able to finished all 18 holes. The front 9 holes were used and the winners with 15 putts each, Karen Krull and Joanne Williams, each won $11.00.  Nice putting on tricky greens! Thank you to Barbara Trivison for runniing the event.

Brookside 9/12/15

We had a warm day at Brookside, with occasional light sprinkles. 36 members and guests played, and most embraced the Team Spirit theme, wearing the colors/insignia of their favorite teams. Judy Mirick (Clemson), Roberta Kantola (USC) and Joyce Mussenden (SF) won Roger Dunn cards for Most Spirited. Joyce also had lowest putts, with Ginny Harwood, at 29. Coral Hawthorne won Closest to the Pin, and no one got on the green – close or otherwise - on #17 – the “Furthest from the Pin” hole! Angie Charky, Jayne Geisler and new member Kim Ulery split the chip-in pool. Everyone seemed to have fun, despite several problems with the course (bathrooms locked, snack bars closed – really!) and at least 25 stayed after golf for hosted appetizers, camaraderie, drinks and awards. Thanks to Captains Holly Schroeder and Judie Chinskey for a great job!
