If you're faced with a difficult bunker lie, particularly a "fried egg," use the sand to your advantage.

As we all know, the quickest way to lower your score on the golf course, is to practice the short game.  Yet many golfers prefer to hit golf balls at the practice facility or play 9-holes rather than practice putting.  When practicing, remember putting is all about distance control - so it's more important to get comfortable with this, before worrying about which way a putt will break.

To begin on the practice green, roll golf balls to different holes with your hand rather than with a putter.  This will help you get an idea of the speed of the green.

Hi Ladies
Just wanted to say what a great crazy day of golf it was!  From the extreme heat to the unbelievable down pour!  So nice having the opportunity to meet other ladies.  Thank you again for your hard work in putting this together!  We all need to take note and try to more in the future.
Play well

You Know Who You Are!

You don't care that your league is ending (that much!)

You see people "packing it in" for the season.

You can sense the earlier sunset knocking on the door.....

You can feel the temperature dropping!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those factors can only mean ONE THING.
FALL BALL!
Many of us are women over the age of 40 and we don't so much care for having our clothing stuck to us, our betting money sweat soaked or drinking the equivalent of a
 Poland Springs office cooler's worth of water to get through a round...
We want FALL BALL!
The leaves are changing, the crowds are thinning and we can stop
feeling like wet noodles out there on the course.
There is no better sport in the universe than golf.
(I'm pretty sure this is a scientific fact backed by centuries of research)
It's you and either 1,2 or 3 other people out in the middle of nature, green grass and QUIET.
You all come to chase the little white ball but you know it's your therapy.
GET OUT THERE and ENJOY
Every year, chapters from across California and Nevada get together to compete with one another in match play (think Solheim & Ryder Cup) formats here on the West Coast. The event became so popular that national EWGA decided to sponsor a similar event nationally a couple of years ago.
That didn't stop the West Coasters from continuing this tradition and it's that time of year again! But we need you to step up and plan to play in this 2-day event. The good news...? It's here in Southern California this year, almost in our backyard.
The event will be held at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita on October 25 & 26. But we need to field a team of twelve. Just like every other EWGA, players of all levels can compete. Lots of flights and teams have a joint handicap.
The event also will have social and fun play events along side, so if competition's not your thing don't let that sway you from coming over to Santa Clarita for golf.
Registration is available in our events section on this site.
We had a great day yesterday on the golf course, but it won't be long until the heat sets in. Start getting ready today. Refresh the stock in your bag: sunscreen, cooling towels, baggies for clean ice or to keep your cooling towel wet, lip balm, hair implements (barrettes, bands, etc) and an extra hat or visor.
Other suggestions: Be sure to buy water before you leave the clubhouse. And although it seems counter-intuitive, think about long sleeves. There are plenty of new solutions for protecting you from the suns harmful rays.
Plan now to check in with your playing partners throughout the round to make sure everyone is aware of each other and how they are keeping up with the heat. We're glad to be welcoming new players from the upper Midwest and other areas of the country not used to triple digit playing conditions.
Be sure to park in the shade as often as possible if you're driving the cart. If you can't find shade, try to position the cart so the sun isn't beating down on the occupants.
Match Play is one of the oldest forms of competition in golf. It pits players one against another, rather than one against the field as in stroke play. Opponents compete to win individual holes, and the player(s) who wins the most holes wins the match.
Match play can be played by two individuals, one on one, and that is known as Singles Match Play. Or teams of two players can square off, with Foursomes and Fourball the most common formats for team play.
As an EWGA Portland member you have several great opportunities to participate in these games. Portland Chapter has a match play ladder league where we play Singles (one player against another) with others in our Chapter. We also have teams forming to participate in Fourball and Singles competition on a Regional basis against other Chapters. The final opportunity is (closed at this point) is Women’s Interclub Play launched this year by the Oregon Golf Association. Our EWGA Portland Chapter plays against other Greater Portland Area women’s golf clubs. Next Year this WIP will be statewide and expand.
We recently hosted a brief get-together to show potential members the benefits of the chapter. The ladies who joined us are returning to the game after or have been playing the game primarily with men and are looking for a change.
We welcomed new members that evening and hope this is the beginning of a trend. That will be determined by a number of things:
1) Regular golf outings - our goal is to have at least 2 each month during the prime season. Please join us as often as you can. Oh, and think about bringing along a friend!
2) Benefits of membership - we recently developed a hand document which summarizes benefits of membership. If you'd like to get a copy, please let us know.
I was born and raised in Buffalo. I survived the blizzard of 1977 (and had 2 weeks off school). I have a winter coat rated for -25 degrees.
But I am so over this winter!
League / Clinic registration opens Saturday after the brunch. I will be playing at Brookwoods on Tuesdays.
See you on the course.
